In October 2008, Nakamoto published a paper on the cryptography mailing list at metzdowd.com describing the bitcoin digital currency. It was titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System". In January 2009, Nakamoto released the first bitcoin software that launched the network and the first units of the bitcoin cryptocurrency, called bitcoins. Satoshi Nakamoto released the Version 0.1 of bitcoin software on Sourceforge on 9 January 2009. Nakamoto claimed that work on the writing of the code began in 2007. Nakamoto knew that due to its nature, the core design would have to be able to support a broad range of transaction types. The implemented solution enabled specialized codes and data fields from the start through the use of a predicative script. Nakamoto created a website with the domain name bitcoin.org and continued to collaborate with other developers on the bitcoin software until mid-2010. Around this time, he handed over control of the source code repository and network alert key to Gavin Andresen, transferred several related domains to various prominent members of the bitcoin community, and stopped his involvement in the project. Until shortly before his absence and handover, Nakamoto made all modifications to the source code himself.

Martti Malmi was the second Bitcoin developer after Satoshi and the founder of the Bitcoin Forum. He's not an active developer anymore, but continues to manage the domain names bitcointalk.org and bitcoin.org. His current employer SC5, a Finnish HTML5 development agency, pays salaries and accepts payments in bitcoins.

Saïvann is a dedicated developer and an active contributor for Bitcoin.

Gavin Andresen is a software developer best known for his involvement with bitcoin. He is based in Amherst, Massachusetts. Originally a developer of 3D graphics and virtual reality software, he became involved in developing products for the bitcoin market in 2010, and was declared by Satoshi Nakamoto as the lead developer of the reference implementation for bitcoin client software after Satoshi Nakamoto had announced his departure. In 2012 he founded the Bitcoin Foundation to support and nurture the development of the bitcoin currency, and by 2014 left his software development role to concentrate on his work with the Foundation.

Will is a website maintainer for Bitcoin and also an active contributor in Github.

Carig is a website maintainer and an active contributor for Bitcoin.

Wladimir van der Laan is a Bitcoin Core developer and the lead maintainer of the Bitcoin repository on GitHub. But he decided to step back from his role, citing the need to “decentralize” more aspects of the project in 2021.

Pieter Wuille is a member of Bitcoin core maintainer team, and he currently is a cryptography and bitcoin stuff at ChaincodeLabs.

Michael Fordan is a member of Bitcoin core maintainer team and active contributor for Bitcoin.

Samuel Dobson is a computer scientist and cryptography researcher from New Zealand, holding a PhD in mathematics from the University of Auckland. He is an ex-maintainer of Bitcoin Core, a role in which he was primarily focused on development of the Bitcoin Core wallet.Previously he has worked as a freelance programmer, tutor, and a consultant for various local companies.
